Writing about Autism

Hello,
Autism or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevlopmental disorder characterized by difficulties with social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior. Until now, there is no known clear cause of autism, but host of factors are known to contribute for it. They include: .
- abnormalities in the brain structure or function
- heredity
- certain conditions as fragile X syndrome
- exposure to toxins like mercury

Unfortunately, autistic people tend to be mistaken for drugged, unconcious or crazy, when they really are feeling uncomfortable in an unusal or new place. So if you see someone behaving ‘oddly’ here are the major symptoms of autism: . - abnormal body posturing or facial expressions
- abnormal tone of voice
- behavioral disturbance - monotonous or flat speech
- inappropriate social interaction

Despite all of the mentioned above, it is important to know how to treat people affected with autism. Not because they are abnormal, or bizzare or weird, but because they are more vulnerable and sensitive about things most of neurotypical people find normal. So if you ever suspect that someone might be affected with ASD, make an effort in order to understand them, be patient, show interest in what they are talking about, even though their topic might not be interesting or boring. Please understand these people because they are HEROES and have a very special brain structure yet endure and suffer of what all of us neurotypical people don’t. You might not know but Hans Christian Andersen (the author of the Little Mermaid) was autistic, as many famous figures.

To punctuate everything I’d like to send love and support to every person suffering from a chronic disease and are struggling to get included. Remember that you aren’t the ones that are abnormal, we are.
